About Allison Shapiro Ph.D.
About Allison Shapiro Ph.D.
I earned my Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology at Palo Alto University, where my studies emphasized health psychology, traumatic stress studies and mindfulness. My pre-doctoral internship was in Colorado at AspenPointe Health Services, where I focused on integrated health services. My post-doctoral training was in San Francisco specializing in couples therapy. I am trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy, relational, humanistic and mindfulness-based interventions as well as biofeedback to manage stress and anxiety. I have also studied emotionally-focused therapy with Dr. Sue Johnson.
I have experience working with adults, couples, adolescents, families, and groups. In addition to private practice, I have worked in a range of clinical settings, including community mental health, hospitals, crisis management, and integrated healthcare. My research interests and areas of publication include work on burnout, vicarious trauma, mindfulness, as well as biofeedback and anxiety. My focus continues to be on wellness and mindful interventions for working with psychological distress. When working with clients, I find that slowing down opens the possibility for healing and insight.
Further Thoughts
In my personal life, I hold a Vipassana (insight) meditation practice, am an active participant in acrobatic yoga, and enjoy playing the guitar and traveling. I’m originally from New York, and now live in Oakland.
It is both an honor and privilege for me to support clients in this way. I am touched and moved by the precious work that each individual or couple achieve who come through my doors. Moving from pain and distance to passion and intimacy (with a partner or with life) is an incredible experience to support. I look forward to embarking on such a journey with you.
My pronouns are she/her/hers. It is my privilege to support clients, and want to intentionally welcome all those with marginalized experiences, specifically regarding race, social-justice, sexual-orientation, gender identification, immigration status and religion.
